Thinking in Web 2.0: Sixteen Ways

[extracted from Web 2.0 journal]

That simple fact is that creating software of any kind is hard work.  And creating good software is very, very hard.  Never mind creating insanely great software (to loosely borrow a phrase from Steve Jobs), which is so rare that it practically never happens, which is a real shame. And that in the end, that's the goal of enumerating ideas like this, so we can build on the shoulders of giants and start off with some of the hard decisions already done and get closer towards the truly great software.

And to be sure, the state of the art in software does regularly improve as well as our shared understanding of what makes software good.  Of course, the problem with determining the "goodness" anything is that it must be measured with respect to something, some criteria.  And in general, thetenets of Web 2.0, such as they are and as ill-defined as they are, tend to state that software that is open, social, interactive, remixable, hackable, and gets better the more its used, is likely the place to begin.

So, in this vein, I took my own studies of Web 2.0 as well as many raw inputs as I could find and came up with a roughly structured list of how to "think" in terms of Web 2.0 ideas.  Let me know what you think and as always add your own in the comments below.  Let's create a really terrific guide for those who are just discovering this  fascinating and useful study of the next generation of online software.

Thinking in Web 2.0

  1. Before you even begin, understand your goal simply.  Whether you are a Web 2.0 application creator or user, clearly conceive your goal.  Things like "I'm here to save a bookmark for use later" or "I am going to help people create shared, editable web pages" helps keep you grounded and oriented.  So much about the initial attraction of Web 2.0 is its simplicity, with unnecessary complexity deliberately and carefully hidden.  From a creation standpoint, think Google's home page or the spare, clean lines of del.icio.us.  And from a end-user's view, the eponymous instaview provided by an initial page load ofDiggdot.us.  You can and will add more later but get first things first.  Build a feature at a time.  Complete a goal at a time. This may sound simplistic but it'll help stayed focused later, and you'll see what I mean.
  2. The link is the fundamental unit of thought.  It's called the Web for a reason. The link is the foundational element for connecting the entire Web together.  Your information, your relationships, your sense of navigability, and even chunks (of chunks) of content are all referenceable by a URL.  The implications here are manifest and include but are certainly not limited to:

    1. Everything on the Web is linkable with a URI or URL (and if isn't, it should be!)
    2. Saving any link lets you get back to what the link originally referenced, and it lets you share it with anyone, anywhere, at any time.
    3. The anytime piece in #2 is crucial and means the link is really a permalink that won't change or go away without good reason and prior warning.
    4. Links should be human readable, consistent, and their purpose self-evident.
  1. Data belongs to those that create it.  Yes, you heard me. Everything a user creates, contributes, or shares is theirs, unless they have given away the right explicitly and by free choice.  Any information they contribute to the Web should be editable, deleteable, unshareable by the contributor whenever they feel like it.  This also means indirect data like their attention records, log entries, navigation history, site trails, or anything else that might be tracked.  And all Web sites must clearly and simply state what information a user is creating and give them a way to stop creating it and even clean up.
  2. It's about data first, experiences and functionality second. Whether it's text, images, audio, or video, the Web ultimately revolves around data.  In other words, you can't have presentation without something to present.  All this data is locatable with a URL that is easily found (see #2).  Another way of looking at this is that the the Web is ultimately about nouns first, and verbs second, though the shift is slowly moving towards verbs these days.  Examples of nouns:  calendar entries, family photos, stock quotes.  Examples of verbs: making an appointment, sharing a picture, buying a stock.
  3. Be prepared to share everything with enthusiasm.  Share everything possible, every piece of data you have, every service you offer.  Encourage unintended uses, bend overbackward to contribute, don't keep anything private that doesn't absolutely have to be.  Gobeyond sharing and make discovery, navigation easy, obvious, and straightforward.  Why: In return, you will benefit many times over from the sharing of others.  Note: This is not a license to violate copyright laws, you will not be able to share your ripped DVDs or commercial music recordings, those are things you agreed you can't share.  But you might find yourself using and sharing a lot more open source media.  And for heaven's sake, learn the Creative Commons license.
  4. The Web is the platform; make it grow.  Sure, there are other platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac), but they don't matter as much any more (this list is after all, how to think in Web 2.0).  In other words, don't leave the platform, don't break the platform, but please, by all means extended the platform.  The data and services you provide on the Web become part of the Web and you become a steward of your corner of the Web platform as a result.  And please be a good steward and look after those that care about what you've added.
  5. Understand and embrace the "capability gradient".  The Web is a big place now, in every country of the world, and it now contains 1 billion users.  The point here is that all parts of the Web are slightly and uniquely different, as are all Web users.  For the machine part of the web: simplicity is almost always preferred for speed, reliability, reuse, and integration.  So too is it with the experience you provide people on the Web.  It's been documented time and again that loyal users soon become expert users that want to do more, faster.  Support them.  Gracefully retrograde.  Also, many, many people will come in below the capability gradient that you expect.  They may not speak your language, have your cultural assumptions, or even know how they got there.  Make it clear to them too.
  6. Everything is editable.  Or it should darn well be.  And if it isn't, go somewhere else.  Sure, a few things might not make sense being editable, but for the rest, it's the Writeable Web.  That doesn't imply that original content is ever lost and often this only means that users should be able to easily comment on or otherwise annotate the content they find.  And if you're smart, they'll be able to do a whole lote more than that (i.e. fork off and create their own works based on the original, etc.)
  7. Identity on the Web is sacrosanct.  Unfortunately, that doesn't mean you get much privacy (really a 20th century notion anyway).  But verifying identity must be expected and be thankful when only an e-mail verification is required.  However, this absolutely means you must protect the privacy of your users if you promised it.  Be warned that you may have to stand up for your users against authorities somewhere in the world, if that's what it requires.  And you might even win in the long run.  And if you're not prepared to do that, you'd better tell them.  On the other side, if identification is required, don't ever fake it, or one day we'll all need to give up our last scraps of privacy to do anything we want to do on the Web.  So, this must be an unbreakable compact between Web user and anyone running some corner of the Web.  Or we will ultimately completely lose what little anonymity and privacy we can muster now.
  8. Know thy popular standards and use them.  From a consumer or creator standpoint, the data you will exchange with everyone else will be in some format or another.  And the useful of that data will be in inverse propotion to how well-known and accepted its standard is.  This generally means using RSS, OPML, XHTML, simple XML, JSON.  This means tending to avoid SOAP, XSD, and even as much as its pains my inner geek to say it, RDF, ATOM, and others.  And please, contribute your standards with your vote either way, below.
  9. Obey the law of unintended uses.  If you make highly interesting data and services open and shareable in widely used format, you will get what you deserve: Other than will use your corner of the Web platform to build on.  Maybe (and probably in fact) a great many others.  Prepare for this.  I don't know how many times I've seen a podcasting service get disrupted because they were popular, a site go down flat when it was Slashdotted, or del.icio.us/popular grind to a halt.  Know this: The law of large numbers on the Internet means that even small corners can get vast traffic if they are remotely interesting.  Strong encourage the attention but it can be extremely valuable,, but always prepare.
  10. Granulate your data and services.  We should have learned this long ago but large monolithic chunks of data are only convenient for unattended downloads and other batch operations.  Break up your data, makes its individual internal pieces URL addressable, and do the same with services.  Conversely, don't create large, elaborate, Christmas Tree data structures or services.  Keep it simple, very simple.  And make the pieces sensibly organized, and make those pieces easily findabe.
  11. Provide data and services that are for user's individual benefit.  At the risk of slipping into a socio-political tarpit, there is little incentive for users to contribute time, attention, and information unless they are the primary beneficiaries.  Social sharing is a terrific benefit that is greater in the large than the individual benefit, but you won't get there unless there is personal incentive.  Nuff said.
  12. User-driven organization and filtering are not just nice to have.  Not critical, but very important.  Let users tag and organize data in ways that make sense to them, because you'll never figure it out in time.  Users understand their own thinking processes and mental models best.  Making sure your place on the Web can work for them can in ways that actually work the way they work and think. Things like tagging and folksonomies can be a long term critical success factor.
  13. Offer/use rich user experiences.  The Web is still in heated competition with native software.  Why? Because it still feels better and runs better. But not for long.  (Sure, this might take 5 years or 15, but it'll happen.)  Yes, I'm talking about Rich Internet Applications, Ajax, and all that marvelous dynamic interaction.  It works and helps make the Web a true "platformless" platform, if you you know what I mean.
  14. Embrace and enable rapid change and feedback.  This often just means be ready for a very fast pace but it also means using lightweight tools, techniques, and not making the painfully inrreversible decisions (using an all-encompasing Ajax framework instead of one that is blendable, or building everything in C++ when Ruby might be a lot better.)  This also means having a very rapid method for taking defect reports, fixing the bugs, and putting new versions out.  And darn it, make it super easy for your users to get a hold of you.  From a user perspective, report every problem you find and be sure to gently complain about what bothers you most, even if it isn't a bug.

Of course, Web 2.0 is an extremely large and involved topic and no one could possibly list all the importants Web 2.0 ideas and ways to think about it.  So I encourage you, since you're here and evidently interested, to take a few minutes and add the things I missed.  Web 2.0 is all about participation after all.

CBL Close 09

A time to test our skills,
A time to build relationships,
As we let ourselves grills,
All for true spirit of championships,

Working hard and smart to win a point,
Never to let the pressures pull us down,
Mistakes and misses are common and not to complaint,
To be a real winner and not a whiner own,

As the championships draws to a close,
All of us were anticipating the winner,
Unfortunately we came to a tie-breaker close,
Another game was forced to be the decider,

The last game was played with grit and sweats,
All were given including our last breath,
This is what we called tournament heats,
Sometimes we can even feel the game wrath,

Despite all, the game brought a closer tie,
Strongly binding team as we shine,
Like splitting evenly of a huge pie,
Everyone has their fare share as opines.

Updates...

Haven't been into blogging for ages... I guessed there are too many things that come into my life that requires and able to gain more attention than my own blog. Maybe, it's because age is catching up and i'm unable to live up to it hence always find time is the missing piece in my life. Always wanted to have more time for more things. But I guess, if I continue to do so, this will never end caused 10 years down the road, the same thing will happen again with the same excuse given. Hence, I hope and trying to put a fullstop to this and will do my best to take control of my time. Instead of being controlled by the time, I think I should be managing the time itself. Easier to say than done... Hehehe...

Guess it's not much an update but some grouses I have about myself and life... Anyway, either way, Life still move on whether I like it or not... So better start to take control now!!!:D

The GREATEST Advice - Rick Warren, the Purpose Driven Life

Don't date because you are desperate.
Don't marry because you are miserable.
Don't have kids because you think your genes are superior.
Don't philander because you think you are irresistible.

Don't associate with people you can't trust.
Don't cheat. Don't lie. Don't pretend.
Don't dictate because you are smarter.

Don't put your life on hold for possibly Mr. Right.
Don't throw your life away on absolutely Mr. Wrong because your biological clock is ticking.

Learn a new skill.
Find a new friend.
Start a new career.
Sometimes, there is no race to be won, only a price to be paid for some of life's more hasty decisions.

To terminate your loneliness, reach out to the homeless.
To feed your nurturing instincts, care for the needy.
To fulfill your parenting fantasies, get a puppy.
Don't bring another life into this world for all the wrong reasons.

To make yourself happy, pursue your passions & be the best of what you can be.
Simplify your life. Take away the clutter.
Get rid of destructive elements: abusive friends, nasty habits, and dangerous liaisons.
Don't abandon your responsibilities but don't overdose on duty.

Don't live life recklessly without thought and feeling for your family.
Be true to yourself.
Don't commit when you are not ready.
Don't keep others waiting needlessly.

Go on that trip. Don't postpone it.
Say those words. Don't let the moment pass.
Do what you have to, even at society's scorn.

Write poetry.
Love Deeply.
Walk barefoot.
Dance with wild abandon.
Cry at the movies.

Take care of yourself. Don't wait for someone to take care of you.
You light up your life.
You drive yourself to your destination.
No one completes you - except YOU.

It isn't true that life does not get easier with age.
It only gets more challenging.
Don't be afraid. Don't lose your capacity to love.
Pursue your passions.

Live your dreams.
Don't lose faith in God.
Don't grow old. Just grow YOU!

When you give someone your time, you are giving them a portion of your life that you'll never get back.
Your time is your life. That is why the greatest gift you can give to someone is your time.
Relationships take time and effort, and the best way to spell love is

T-I-M-E
because the essence of love is not what we think or do or provide for others, but how much we give of ourselves .

Letting go...

Burdened by constant load,
Unwilling to let go,
Feeling down and sad,
Bogged by self-ego,

Assumptions that time will heal,
Living in fear and unforgiving,
Unable to enjoy every meal,
Life is without meaning,

Until a point of no return,
Did he realised of such importance,
After many midnites burn,
He finally understood the grace,

That he cant fathom all,
Sometimes he needs to let go,
For greater heights than fall,
Wishing it was just a moment ago...

Missing…

Miss my creative writings,
After months of missing,
Hope this will be another good beginning,
As I’ll continue to do my best thinking,

I was missing in action,
Although nothing to shout about,
Just a little lost in my translation,
As I was seeking my route,

Some realization was found,
That everything comes with a price,
Knowing this keeps me astound,
Sometimes we just need to sacrifice,

This is the truth of life,
Either you take it and move on,
Or deny and grief,
Wise man says “hang on”,

As I continue to seek and grow,
There are more to come,
Continue to be patient and stay low,
Stay happy and positive me!:)

My little surgery…

It’s just like any other fine Saturday except it’s my 2nd non-working Saturday after some time. Apart from that I went for a small surgery (Sebaceous Gland). It was my 1st time I’m doing a surgery. You know going through the procedures. It’s really an eye-opener for me. The need to put on the sexy piece of cloth (not too comfortable but after sometime I just got used to it), lying on top of a hospital bed waiting eagerly for my turn to be sliced open to remove the piece of meat, being push on the wheelchair barefooted to the surgery room and then transferred to a movable bed and covered with blanket in full except my head (lying there stationary for sometime like a piece of wood until I asked them what I was waiting and they told me waiting for the surgeon). The part which I’m not too used to is surrounded by nurses and people pushing me here and there. Hmmmm… not saying I’m enjoying the process but I feel weird and uncomfortable and at many times I asked whether I can walk on my own or not but the nurses said it’s part of the hospital procedures and I guess it applies everywhere else. Finally, I get my chance to enter the surgery room or operation theatre. By the way, did I mention that my surgery initially supposed to be scheduled at 8:30AM but was delayed till around 11 AM because there was an emergency case whereby a mum need to do a caesarian delivery. Hence I just waited for my turn lo. Anyway, back to the surgery room, again I was surrounded by even more people and equipments and was again transferred from the movable bed to the surgery bed. All in all, I think I was transferred 3-4 times from my hospital bed to the surgery bed. Hmmm… Prior to the surgery, they (the nurses – 2 men and 4 woman) were deciding how they should positioned me caused the Sebaceous Gland growth is on the left top corner of my back. After a few tries, they finally decided to put me face-down so that I’m much comfortable that way. Then they tied my left leg against the bed. Not sure what’s that for. Maybe they worry in the middle of the surgery due to the pain, I may kick someone. Muahahaha… perhaps so:P After all the setups and this and that, finally the surgeon came in. He joke a little and ensure that this will be quick and I should not feel much pain and told me to let him know if I feels any pain during the surgery. Then, my left index finger was fixed to a detector which connects to a heart beat machine and I can hear my the machine beating sound pretty loudly… beep…beep…beep… (This reminds me of the many episodes in Grey’s Anatomy and how an operation theatre looks and feels like although those in the series look much more complicated with many more things and the watch tower). Then a nurse tried to inject antibiotic into my right hand while I gripped my palm to allow her to find my vein. I thought it won’t be that difficult for her to find it but somehow she try and try and poke deeper n deeper and finally she managed to reach the vein. While this is happening, the surgeon was injecting a few injections around the around of the growth. I felt like I was being bitten by a few mosquitoes or rather the pain is slightly more than that. The whole surgery took around 30-45minutes. Lucky for me, I didn’t feel any pain while the surgeon removed the growth apart from feeling as though there is something touching my back. After removal of the growth, he showed it to me… I can’t believe that that little piece of skin/growth/sebaceous gland is as big as a cashew nut. Because there are some tissues in it, they will need to send to the lab to further experiment it for any further complications or infections or such. Then I was transferred a few times again till I finally reached the hospital bed. After rested on my bed, was warned by the nurse not to got the washroom or avoid any movements for the 1st 30mins or so caused I may feel dizzy and when the anesthetic is gone, I may start to feel more pain. Luckily, I didn’t feel any of those and after resting for another 2hrs or so, I finally discharged myself. All in all, this is really something new to me and I hope not to experience it again. Was on my home bed for the rest of the day… what a Saturday! Glad everything went on smoothly and able to go back home safely! :)

P/s: I’m much more blessed and what I’ve gone through is nothing at all if was to compare to what the victims at China and Myanmar have to brave through. I’ll pray for them and hope things will be better soon…

Happy Wesak Day to All of you and May you be blessed always!

4th year anniversary... (the "CHANGE" factor)

Today mark the 4th year anniversary of my blog… though 4 years has passed but nothing much has changed here apart from the skins, some layout here and there and maybe some of the contents or the way I see and write things. But one thing for sure that changed the most is the people around me and me especially. So far, the change I experienced and from the feedbacks I gathered they are some which pretty positive while some are rather negative which requires a lot of work from my side to make things better. I know I’m so far away from the being “perfect” or “near-perfect” but I do constantly strive or trying my best to improve myself and make it a better self for me and the people around me. Well, it’s always easier to say than done and as the saying goes: “Old Habits Die Hard!” but if I continue to live my life with this idea that I can or will never be able to change those negative habits then I’m going nowhere or going around in circles. It’s never easy to “CHANGE”. It’s such a BIG word for a small thinking person like me to understand it. Yeah, again making the first step to change it’s not that difficult if you already had enough of your old and ugly self and slowly making the first move. The toughest part will be to preserve it. Ok, I’m trying to say something which is so obvious to many of us especially myself but I’m still saying it. The reason is simple, the way our brains works is pretty interesting and complex whereby if we constantly tell ourselves that I need to change and that with this change, I’ll bring in more goodness and happiness not just to myself and to the people around me will bring huge benefits then we are more likely to do the change as the incentives is far larger than ourselves (that is if you can convince yourself that it’s really beneficial caused some people may see it differently and for them, this could be some crazy guy trying to bring in some crazy ideas of change to himself whereby what he needs to change is to stop asking for change but instead treasure what he/she is having/enjoying now and be contented with it.), but I do really hope that one day all these changes that I’ve been seeking will be able to see the day. Yeah, it’s as simple as that. “You never try, you never know”. I guess in the science world, this is called as conditional thinking. Well then again, this could be untrue/very true depending on how you see and perceived things around you. Hell with it right, so long if it really works, who cares? Ehehe…

Putting the change factor aside, well one thing for sure that I’ll never change or it’ll be very hard for me to change unless I have amnesia or knockout and ended up in some coma or what, the two things I love the most apart from WTM (that goes without saying, if you don’t believe, checkout my post here) are:

My lovely favourite hot cuppa of cappuccino…

And my undying craving for cheesecake….

Without them, my world will never be the same again… muahaha… please don’t ask me to change and stop drinking coffee and eating cheesecake, you might’s well knock me out or give me an amnesia… :P

p/s: Orh yeah, here is my 1st post... not sure how or why or what got it started that way or perhaps sometimes there is no "why" or "how" or "what", we just need to live with it and enjoy it as it is... muahaha... I was so silly then... :P

Happy Mother’s Day!

A special occasion for all MUMS,
For all her sacrifices and contributions,
For which without, we’re none,
We’re always her number one attention,

She brings life to our little world,
Fill with happiness and loving care,
Even if it means all her time in the world,
Such is the mum’s love that is so rare,

Sometimes she may nag about this and that,
But that’s because she cares for us,
She’s so capable and wears many hats,
Taking care of all our daily needs without fuss,

In her eyes, we’re always this little child,
Trying to see through our life’s discoveries,
But she’ll always be there guiding us through its wild,
Recalling all the lessons and the fond memories,

We may have grown apart by age,
But her love and care will never wear,
Although we know one day she’ll leave our centre stage,
But we’ll do my best to love, treasure and care for her,

Mother’s Day celebration may come once a year,
But we should try to make every day a Mother’s Day for her,
Because of her, we are here,
Let’s not forget that and make it special for her!

some line of positive thoughts... cheers!!!

"Every good thought, every good word, every good emotion, and every act of kindness, is lifting the vibration of your being to new heights. And as you begin to raise your vibration, a new life and a new world will reveal itself to you."

"There is no limit to how high you can increase your vibration, because there is no limit to the good thoughts you can think, or the good words you can speak, or the acts of kindness that you can do. Other than transforming your own life through lifting your vibration, you lift others' lives too. The positive vibration of your energy emanates out like a stone thrown into water, touching our planet and every living thing on it. As you rise higher, you take the world with you."

~~Have a good week ahead! :)~~

My Yummy-yummy WTM…

Constantly thinking of you,
Unable to forget our encounters,
Willing to go far for you,
Having you is all that matters,

Each day passes by, my craving grows,
Nothing that can come between us,
Not having you is a big blow,
All I can think of is you thus,

Each time I see you, I drool,
Like seeing a beautiful goddess,
You always appear calm and cool,
Thoughts running wild and caused a mess,

Although our encounter is always short-lived,
But I treasured every moment we spent,
You made my day very much alive,
Willing to spend for you till my very last cent,

You are none other than my favorite Wantan Mee,
I wonder how’s life like without you,
I guess it’ll be empty without the yummy-yummy,
This piece is sincerely written by me for you…(to be continued…)

Friendship…

Everything starts from this little seed,
Known to many as “friendship”,
Affects those who are sincere and in need,
Serving you in your little ship,

Riding through the small and big waves,
Overcoming obstacles of great,
Our friendship will remains strong so long as we lives,
With courage and perseverance we greet,

Days may come and go,
As our friendship will continue to grow,
Years may pass and go,
Our friendship will stay forever and this is our vow,

We enjoy many things together,
From sports to movies to mamak,
We just love those time spent together,
Sometimes we just do nothing but lepak,

Those are the times that will not be forgotten,
Good memories that will remind us of our present,
In this little ship which full of momentum,
Thrusting ahead with full movement,

We will never run out of energy,
Always enjoying each other company,
You will not be my allergy,
Although our time spent are not many,

Sometimes changes are inevitable but for better,
Even though we may need to weather,
But this friendship is here to stay forever,
Time may come and go but our friendship will not wither…

Happy Friendship!!! :)

Be Positive!

Sometimes you may fall sick,
Only to recover much better,
Sometimes you may lose your pick,
Only to find something better,

Sometimes you may fall,
Challenging you to stand tall,
Sometimes you just run out of luck,
Encouraging you not to duck,

Sometimes you are blown away,
Far from where you stand,
Understanding not always is your way,
Sometimes you just need to bend,

Sometimes you lost track of time,
While working hard to earn a dime,
Time lost cannot be recovered,
Sometimes it’s not too late to make over,

Sometimes you are disappointed,
By the things life appointed,
Sometimes you are frustrated,
By the things life entrusted,

Sometimes you lost your temper,
When things are at its lowest end,
Sometimes you just a need pamper,
Someone that cares and tend,

Sometimes you just need a break,
From the world’s agony,
Sometimes you just need a tweak,
To keep you going with sanity,

Sometimes life may appear larger,
Facing challenges that are much bigger,
This is when you need to believe,
Always to Be Positive!

P/s: Sometimes you just need to be strong and stay positive, as good times will come, it may not be now but it’ll come…

Meaning of LIFE

Always seeking for opportunity,
Not afraid to face the challenges,
Never give up but with continuity,
Living life to the edges,

Simple as it may sound,
Putting it to perspective its what that counts,
To embrace it and be bound,
By the Life Principles of renown,

I may stumble upon some pitfalls,
These are all but valuable lessons,
Helping myself to build a more resilient wall,
To prepare myself mentally without tiresome,

I maybe slow but I'm determined,
To conquer all my challenges ahead,
I may not be smart but not to be undermine,
I will strive harder instead,

Defeat is just another step closer to success,
Nothing can stop this march but myself,
Giving all I have without recess,
As I seek to be a better self... :-)

Drumming Weekend…

Last Saturday, AJ, JK and myself went for a hands percussion performance at KLPac. It was a new experience for me as this is my first time witnessing such a spectacular drumming scene plus a few artistic ones as well. It was a full-housed show. There was even a school bus with a group of teenagers purposely came to support the show. You can roughly tell how popular and well-received these hands percussion teams are.

Just a little bit of history, Hands Percussion has been around for sometime now since 1997. This year is their 10th Anniversary hence it’s something special for them and everyone else. Not to mentioned that they even won a few BOH Cameronian Arts Awards in 2004. Needless, to say they another great example of “Malaysia Boleh” spirit! Aren’t proud to be Malaysian…

They started of with “bang” with their “Drumbeat Inferno” performance. It was magnificent to see, hear and feel the beat of the drums together with their skillfulness in handling and choreographing them altogether. In between, they were also a few good performances as well, where art meet instruments. They blend the dance and play pretty well which gives me an “eye-opener” and keeps me wondering they meaning behind each scene. According to AJ, there were supposed to have some meaning and we need to think deeper for the interpretation. For me, I was like “hmmm... it’s something new hence didn’t thought of that far yet. Maybe I’m just lacking the “art & music” feel of it”. But as the show goes on, I just started to see and understand things slightly better. As always as mentioned by JY, they will usually ends the show by leaving a good expression to the audience. This is when we get to witness a great combination of drums, skill sets and choreography. They called it, “Fruition”, the result of 10 years of sheer dedication to an art form that has evolved with this group of drummers. Again, they did well by ending it with another great “bang”….

Overall, it was another great experience especially the drumming part and last but not least, their choreography was as good.

More can be sort here…

Fracture

It was a slow and lazy weekend. Maybe I needed rest hence spent most of the time at home apart from treating myself to a quite a good movie by Gregory Hoblit. Initially was supposed to catch “Invasion” because of Nicole Kidman but after reading and hearing some reviews, me and my group of friends decided to switch to “Fracture” instead. Nevertheless, we made the right choice and “Fracture” was entertaining and pretty good looking at the fact that they have of one the Hollywood big name in it. Mr. Anthony Hopkins. I’ve to admit that Mr. Anthony has aged a lot (can see a lot wrinkles). Not sure how old is he now but he looks like someone around 70+. But, he is still as good as he was when he acted in the “Silence of the lamb”. I guess that is where he found his fame (especially his trademark "stare", can really psycho you man!). Apart from his good acting, the show does have quite a good storyline. As usual, me and my friends are not easily satisfied for some simple movies but we usually prefer movies that are thoughts provoking and with plenty of twists. I guess we like the “unexpected” part. The best if we could anticipate it, that will keep us glued to the seats and deserved our full attention. Well, each of us have our great taste for movies and that is why they have so many genres out there to satisfy the fans. Anyway, I’ll leave it to you guys to enjoy and decide for your own. Happy Watching!:)

Seeking life…

Waking up to the morning sun,
Wondering what a great day to bask,
As I get myself ready to run,
Getting into the mood of my tasks,

Doing my best in everything,
Even if I’m faced with the toughest problem of all,
When I’m down I’ll make myself sing,
Singing out loud and make the problem small,

Not to let myself caught within,
By not falling into the trap of anxiety,
Equipped myself with the right thinking,
Don’t be another fool in this society,

It is such the oddity of life,
Whether we make it or not,
Depending on our faith and belief,
Either we succeed or rot!

Maksud Merdeka...

50 tahun dahulu,
Kita berjuang untuk kebebasan,
50 tahun sekarang,
Kita berjuang untuk keharmonian,

Walaupun terdapat banyak kemodenan,
Hati dan naluri kita masih sama,
Tak berubah hanya semakin degil,
Enggan menerima kebebasan bersama,

Apalah perjuangan Bapa-Bapa Merdeka,
Adakah usaha mereka seumpama fantasi,

Suatu dahulu kita mengemari kebebasanmu,
Sebuah negara yang aman dan damai,
Sekarang kita menakuti hari depanmu,
Terjebak di dalam kemusykilan yang pelbagai,

Akan tetapi kita masih berharap untuk keharmonian,
Untuk suatu hari yang mulia and bebas,
Supaya kita dapat bersantap tanpa kebimbangan,
Menlaung Hari Merdeka tanpa was-was!!!

Ratatouille (by Brad Bird) & Secret (by Jay Chou)

As you have noticed, I was away for a period of time. Reason, I was busy watching these two good movies: (trying to think of a better reason but what better reason that to watch these two good movies)

Ratatouille:
It tells a story about a rat named Remy which have a special ability to scent for good food and how he become one of the famous chef in “Paree…” His adventure and despise all the disappointment; he continues to strive to become one of the “Paree” most famous chefs. I quite the part where it says “Anyone can cook” (which is quite true and again this does not only apply in cooking but in everything we do in our daily live). As usual, there will always be a moral of the story / lesson to be learned. The storyline was good and again Pixar strike a 10/10 movie once again!

More to be told here.

Secret:
It is Jay Chou first directing and acting at the same time. Although his acting was quite good but the storyline was even better. It was truly a touching love story. Although, the ending was kind of sad but there were some twist here and there which makes it more than just a typical Chinese romance movie. As the story slowly unfolds, it’ll really catch you by surprised… not going to spoil your appetite further on!

More to be told here.

For those who have not catch it yet, try it out! :)

The return of the longkang bowler…

(Part 1 of the longkang bowler can be found here)

Longkang bowler is back,
Because of his pact,
Not to be taken aback,
As he bowls with an impact,

Longkang is where he started,
Learning it the hard way,
Through longkang he established,
Slowly he learns to bowl away,

Tries after tries,
Never say never,
Cries after cries,
Destined not to be the longkang bowler forever,

Back with the improved "longkang" throw,
Still plenty of room for improvement to be made,
Fortunate to get 4 strikes in a row,
Could be due to his lucky jade,

Losing his longkang streak,
But gaining his striking streak,
Let us all not be freak,
As his longkang throw starts to weak,

Looking forward for that strike,
Been longing all day long,
A spare will also be alrite,
So long the strikes will come along,

Wish all the longkang bowlers good luck,
Remember this longkang principle,
In life you will never be stuck,
So long you are a loyal longkang disciple!

Morale of the story: "If you think you can, you can!" Go longkang bowlers all around!!! :)

Bon Voyage…

A short trip it may seem,
To the valley of sun,
Continue to keep your esteem,
As you do your run,

Missing you by miles,
In hope that time will fall short,
We could still remember your smiles,
Keep them alive and not distort,

The good times will resume,
As the days is outnumbered,
We’ll meet again soon,
As long as we could remember,

Safe flight and journey,
Enjoy yourself without worries,
After all it’s all "ah gong" money,
Do your work and get the glory! :)

CHEERS & BYES!

The Cabinet (By: asianjoke.com)

Mahathir was so disappointed with his cabinet for being inefficient and corrupt that he decided to call on Goh Chok Tong and ask him how he managed to have such an efficient and incorruptible cabinet.

On hearing Mahathirs woes, PM Goh said, "Simple, Mahathir, I choose able men for my cabinet." Mahathir asked, "Yes, but how do you know that they are able?"

PM Goh replied, "Just ask them simple questions to test their intelligence, don't need to be too difficult. Let me illustrate to you." Just then, Tony Tan was walking by, PM Goh called out to him, "Hey Tony, come over here." Tony obediently walked briskly over.

PM Goh asked, "Tell me, Tony, who is your fathers son ?" Tony Tan immediately replied, "Me! Of course."

PM Goh turned to Mahathir and said, "See, all my ministers can answer this question. Why don't you go back and try." Mahathir thank PM Goh and left.

Once he was back, he immediately summoned Anwar, his deputy, and shot the question at him, "Tell me, Anwar, who is your father's son ?" Anwar was shocked beyond words and did not know the answer. After a while, he recovered and said, "Boss, let me find out and I'll tell you tomorrow." Mahathir, a bit disappointed, agreed, hoping that Anwar will give a good answer tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Anwar was panicking that his boss was testing him. He tried desperately to find out the answer from his staff, but none of them knew the answer. The next morning, he decided to call Bill Clinton for help. Surely the most powerful person in the world must know the answer.

When Bill picked up the phone, Anwar said, "Hello, Bill, can I ask you a question?" Clinton, very busy, replied, "Alright, but it better be good !" Anwar quickly asked, "Tell me, Bill, who is your father's son ?" Clinton was fuming, "Of course it's me, you stupid !" and he slammed the phone down.

Satisfied that he's got the answer, he confidently walked into Mahathir's office and said, "Boss, I've got the answer to your question." Mahathir, happy that his deputy wasn't that dumb, said, "So tell me quick, who is your fathers son, Anwar ?"

Anwar confidently replied, "It's BILL CLINTON !"

Mahathir slapped his own forehead in disgust and said, "No you stupid, it's TONY TAN !"

happy birthday mum!

She brings life to me,
She gives me the first beat,
Without her there will be no me,
In my mind she is always great,

I’m one of her greatest invention,
To be here today I’m grateful of her,
Remembering this will be my sensation,
It’s my quest to bring her more cheer,

She nurtures me when I was young,
She provided me with love and care
Always there for me to be found,
Such are the warmth and attention which are so rare,

I constantly fall while learning to stand,
She taught me how to stand strong,
Even the strongest wind I must withstand,
Remembering this I could not be wrong,

As I grow wiser and older,
She taught me how to be a good man,
Not to forget her teaching and reminder,
As I seek and become a better man,

She cooked for me day and night,
With her around, I’ll never starve,
Her cooking always taste good and right,
Her pork with sauce, is a must to have,

Sometimes I was lost in my path,
I went to seek for her wisdom,
She guided me to the right path,
There I was, out of my conundrum,

I can’t feel anymore blessed,
Than to have her as my greatest mum,
She has taught me without tired,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU MUM! :)

Do you know this bloke?!?!

Sometimes he does not know himself,
Saying things that without known,
Can be of annoying and repeating self,
Learning to accept none other than his own,

Crappy and funny are his weaknesses,
Going beyond I could not imagined,
Lacking of seriousness and caring to his amasses,
Slowly conquering them and make aligned,

Easily makes friends with others,
Getting to know them are his blessings,
Not allowing a friendship to dithers,
As the friendship continue growing,

Good friendships are hard to find,
Once found, it takes a lifetime to refine,
Maturing over time with great bind,
As time passes, it’ll “taste” like a great wine,

He may not have the “cool” factor,
To act and keep you calm and steady,
But he does have the “warm” factor,
To heat and keep you warm and ready,

Sometimes he maybe short-fused,
Due to the unstable current and voltage,
Learning what’s best to control and diffused,
Hopefully the stability will rendered with age,

Badminton and tennis are his favourite sports,
Keeping him alive and afresh all week round,
Letting off his stresses which may caused distorts,
Better handling and game strategy makes him sound,

The rest are future in the making,
Hopefully to strive to be a better person,
Modesty and benignity are what he is seeking,
Impossible is nothing but just a reason!

My “Zhong Zi”…

You come in many shapes,
Wrapped in bamboo leaves,
You keep us away from starves,
Favourite to many who likes,

Best consume while it’s fresh,
Aroma of it makes you feel unrest,
The moment I see you I have the crush,
Can’t wait to taste your filling best,

You maybe tough on the outside,
But you are soft on the inside,
Always waiting for you readily,
As you melt in my mouth easily,

You maybe oily and sticky,
That’s your traits that makes you shine,
Having you in my mouth I feel so lucky,
As I chew and taste you like mine!

I AM WHO I AM...

Nothing special, nothing ordinary,
Just like any other being,
Brought to this world of glory,
As I gained my strength and wing,

I start to seek for improvement,
Bearing in mind nothing is perfect,
But sometimes I’m befall with bereavement,
As I lost myself in confusion of my act,

Not too late to realization,
The battle is not all lost,
Need to shake off my temptation,
As I moved away from my own ghost,

Nothing loss, nothing gain,
This is life of learning,
No guarantee it’s without pain,
As I continue seeking...

Sunshine Just Around the Corner…

A gloomy day without the rays from the sun,
Dark clouds hovering over my weary sight,
Chased by the darkness I began to run,
Away from the darkness towards the light,

Never been given any task too easy,
Never been put on such intangible weight,
Made difficult because we are lazy,
Made heavy because we lack might,

Unknown of the unpaved roads,
That laid ahead with challenges,
Full with dirt and rocks that hoard,
Steadily manoeuvred across the hinges,

Moving forward without looking back,
Slowly but surely reaching the destination,
Deep inside knowingly to be on track,
Sunshine just around the corner of stagnation!

A Memorable Trip...

Departing from south,
Heading towards north,
Defying the jams and thunder,
Fulfilling a dream of hunger,

Met two kind souls,
Brought us around on a food hunt,
Only good food were served to full,
Gobbling around like a food stunt,

Over-satisfying my little tummy,
Till it overflow with juices of yesterday,
The output may not be as yummy,
Ejecting out in a form of a clay,

Please do not feel disgusted,
As this is only the beginning,
Hoping for more to come till we are busted,
With all the good food available in the offering!

Hiatus...

Was away for sometime,
Busy with work and life,
Lack of effort and time,
Even no time for myself,

Starting to re-create,
Making life more rewarding,
Best not procrastinate,
Living life to the best standing,

Was also lost in words,
Lack of discipline and thoughts,
Making laziness as my lords,
Disciplined thoughts to be sought,

Hopefully this will last,
I can’t be sure of its duration,
It may be gone like a dust,
Wise to keep life with saturation!

Qing Ming

Today mark the actual day where we visit our beloved’s graves to pay respect to them with offerings and at the same time sweep clean the area around the grave. It’s a time for family reunion where uncles, aunties, cousins, nephews and nieces come from various locations to meet and pray for our beloved. Offerings such as dim sum and huat kuehs are common sightings but some even brought their own home cooked food which were once the favorite’s dishes of our beloved ones.

As for me, I was supposed to visit my grandpa’s grave but due to the constraint that my parents together with my aunt and grandma and uncle all fit nicely into one car, they suggested that I stay on. And I did. I don’t mind driving another car since I only get to do this once a year but maybe they have other plans in their mind. And they were right, when they got home, they told me that luckily I did not went along caused they were stucked in 2 hours jam and couldn’t find a proper parking when they arrived. Hmmm… on my first thought, I feel relief I did not tagged along but after thinking further, I started to realize that it’s not too bad caused this is the only time of the year where I could visit my grandpa grave and I’m willing to trade the jams and hot sun for it. Yeah, most will think that, that’s probably just an excuse I give to myself so that I’ll feel better for not going but that wasn’t my intention at all. To make things worse, I did regretted a few times, especially each time when I thought of it again and again. But what to do, it already passed. Hence I can only move on and really hope that next year I’ll just do it!

Here’s something I put together for you grandpa although you passed away for nearly 10 years now.

You nurtured me when I was young,
You took care of all my needs,
Can still remember the lullaby that you sung,
Cuddling this little boy from his seeds,

Driving me to school each day,
Keeping me safe in the comfort seat,
I can remember all his advice till today,
Sit tightly was his usual advice of caveat,

Ah Gong, Ah Gong each time I yelled,
His reply always excite me with his wide beam,
Will never forget his smile that lasted,
Remains fresh in my memory forever seem,

Although you have gone for many years,
But all your teachings and advices will be carried on,
To remind me and to act as your eyes and ears,
That I will be a better person or at least a good son,

I regretted much that I missed my Qing Ming trip,
It was supposed to be a trip down memory lane,
Vowed to make it next year or I’ll be whip,
You will always be remembered in my heart!

Satay-Night-Fever…

It was a good night out. Hanged out with AJ and JK for a quick bowling game followed by dinner, CB (too bad the all-famous blueberry cheesecake wasn’t around) and finally the main destination of the night, satay heaven!

If the night even stayed a little bit longer, I think I’ll become an eddy-float! Muahahaha… Dinner was sumptuous, even though I couldn’t feed more into my little stomach but I felt guilty for wasting those food when people over at Africa are dying because lack of food. Haih… so once I again, I forced those last two pieces of large pizzas through my mouth along my throat into my stomach! After that, I felt so “sang fu” but over-satisfied!

Then we went for CB’s BCC hunting. The hunt begins from old wing all the way to new wing @ 1U. The response wasn’t what I want to hear but I glad they don’t sell that BCC else I think my stomach will suffer!

It’s definitely a night which I won’t feel less of food or laughter!:D

It did not end there, after CB, we headed out of 1U for the night main hunt. But before even out dinner got digested, we’ve already going for supper! Muahahaha… But the supper was great. It’s something I’ve longed and craved for. Finally, get to taste the all-famous PJ State Satay! It was really tasty and good. It was fat-free just chicken meat. Not overly burned. The gravy was good although from the first impression, it looks light in color but after mixing with the sambal, it just blends well. Not too spicy not too oily either. A full round dip of the satay, and a bite of the tender chicken meat, you feel like it’s no doubt the best satay around town. The satay rice was good as well. Not too hard and soft. Just nice!

Oh boy! I feel so much full and satisfied now! The satay hunt was a successful one! Thanks to AJ & JK for the great company and food! Let’s do again next time… ehehehe… maybe set our target on something else…

(a little satay poem for you guys!)

Your tanginess makes me high,
Your tastiness put me in nigh,
A bite of you, I go wild,
A thought of you, I lost my mild,

Satay orh Satay, you fed me well,
Breaking my hunger spell,
I wish you’ll always be there for me,
Whenever my hunger comes!

[Satay+Rice+Cucumber+Onions+Gravy = a great satisfaction!]

[in close proximity... for those who have also been craving for it... don't you think it's time you take the action?!?! look at the juiciness of the satay stick... whoa...]

CNY Aftermath…

Uncontrollable consumptions of the “sinful” food,
To satisfy not only a hunger but a desire,
Losing yourself into the realm of “makan” mood,
Wallowing and gobbling away in your own hire,

A disease or outbreak that many feared,
“Weight Gained” are the two big words that ticks,
Even the smallest of all could not survived,
From the intimidation of the “fats” that picks,

One step into the scale reveals all,
Nowhere to hide and seek,
The indicator tells as though the world will fall,
A big “SIGHED” in meek,

To be proud with cheer,
Accepting the fact that your tummy do grow,
Or to be shame with jeer,
Rejecting the idea with a raised eyebrow,

Rather go for the previous worth,
After all we are indeed in the “golden” pig year,
Expecting not only horizontal but fortunes growth,
Reality and imagination is just a thin line near!

p/s:
you see, after all, it's not so bad if you end up like this..

cute.. little piggy... piggy... muahahaha... :p

In honour of LIFE...

I was driving home after a friendly and joyous game of bowling. Thought to myself, that I should get home earlier and avoid the unnecessary jams. Hence, usually I will take the Federal Highway to go home cause it’s cheaper and nearer but maybe hit by jams between PJ Hilton and the exit to LDP. Choosing the out of the norm way, I decided to go for NKVE instead having in my mind that I’ll eventually be home 20mins earlier and it’ll definitely be traffic free.

But to my surprised and horror, I was caught in an unexpected jams the moment I exit from Damansara toll. The jams can be seen stretched all the way from Jln Duta toll towards and never-ending end of road. I was really puzzled and speechless. And what I could do or can think was to make myself comfortable and less pressure by heaving a big SIGH! So I slowly pulled my car across from the slowest lane to the fastest lane although traffic was still as bad and crawling. In my mind, I was asking myself, Why? Why now? Did I made the wrong choice again? Orh gosh! Orh NO! Not Again!

I was thinking to myself, how silly I was to make such a choice. Paying more, driving on a longer distance and getting myself stuck in what could be the worst ever jam I’ve ever encountered on NVKE. NKVE supposed to be one of the most expensive concessionaire highways with smooth flow of traffic due to the straightness and wide road. As we were all slowly driving ourselves closer and closer to the end of the jam, something really beyond my imagination caught my very attention.

(I know most people will thought or assumed it’s an accident but I just don’t know why that very moment, I just thought of it could be some road closure due to some repairs. Never came to me it’ll turn out to be an accident. I guess it’s because CNY is just around the corner, I can only hope or only thought of good things. And I was WRONG!)

It was a body covered with a white piece of cloth lying straight on the road and surrounded by police cars and PLUS officials lorry with blinking signage to divert traffic to the left lanes. And next to the body, were splattered of bloods. I could not see any wreckages nearby. They could have hauled them away. Even though, it was so dark, I could see the bloody scene quite clearly and it got my mind and slowly as I immersed myself into the scene, it got me thinking and pondering into all sort of thoughts, ideas and regrets… and that my friend, is where I came up with these uncontrollable thoughts… It really touched my heart and I feel so saddened then… how things could be so wrong and it could go either way or what if I was the one lying there? What will happen to my parents and my loved ones? I couldn’t stop myself from feeling even worse when I thought further and further away… I even shut my stereo to let myself fall deeper… while trying my best to have full control over my vehicle… and I thing for sure I did that if I never came across that incident will not even thought of, was that, I quickly slowed down my car within the speed limits. Amazing isn’t it? How easy to teach a hard-headed and impatient driver like me to even slow down? But I did… and even though I was not the victim of the ugly and saddening accident, I kind of felt that I was the one who learned from it…

In honour of LIFE...

We breathe Life the moment we were born,
It brings a new meaning to us and our loved ones,
Bringing happiness and joy without scorn,
Sourly issues will be of bygones,

As Life slowly becoming larger,
We become careless and forgetful,
Ignoring and putting ourselves in great danger,
Indulging with iniquity thoughts and be resentful,

Then one day you realized,
That Life is just too short,
Easily gone with the wind in a whizzed,
Taking you and everything away with a big snort,

Everything you knew and treasured are now gone,
What is left, is nothing but a grasp of dust,
Laying there is just a piece of tombstone,
Leaving behind a piece memory that will eventually rust,

My friend, Life is just too fragile,
Can be taken or washed away in a flash,
Without knowing or seeing or going to that extra mile,
Life as it is, is now gone and become ashes,

Shall not complain that Life is too full,
Shall not complain that Life is too little,
Only to beleaguer by your own fool,
To live your Life with great mettle,

Only then can you see the real meaning,
Shall not be shadowed by our own past,
Be strong and calm and ever evolving,
To be a better person overall, we surpass,

How much more you need to know,
Is that all worth in this lifetime,
Before it is too late, get your act together right now,
Spend your life meaningfully and regret not of that time!

P/s: Please forgive me for posting such a sad story on what could be the most or happiest moment for the most couples tomorrow during valentine or for those who already in such a wonderful and joyful mood to celebrate CNY, pardon me, even though there are so many happy and wonderful moments and things in life, we shall take them for granted and be complacent of it but instead always look and see it on a different perspective, and if one is wise enough, he or she will be able to realize how blessed he or she is!

february... (a monotonous month?... maybe not!)

Month of joy and celebrations,
Signified January has departed,
Counting down to CNY with anticipation,
Not to forgotten our NYR that we committed,

On the 1st we had twin celebrations,
One was the Federal Territory 33rd Anniversary,
And celebrated nationwide is the Thaipusam possessions,
Both bringing joy and happiness for any ordinary,

Coming 14th is the V-Day,
Where lovers express their love for each other,
Also known as the Saint Valentine’s Day,
Gifts comes in the form of chocolates or flowers altogether,

17th marks the CNY’s Eve,
Family of all shapes and sizes gather,
Everyone will talk big, laugh loud and eat more without leave,
In a big reunion dinner that brings prosperity forever,

On the 1st CNY day, sounds of crackers and fireworks,
Can be heard from across the streets and neighbours,
Changing into the your new CNY clothes that sparks,
Greeting parents and relatives "Gong Xi Fa Chai" for angpows,

CNY is celebrated for exactly a month,
Many cheers and beers are consumed,
To enliven the "red" event with laughter and smooth,
Not to be forgotten the lion dance that amused,

Buckled up for this crazy joyride,
Who knows you might strike yourself something great,
In this 28 days as we stride,
Seeking for goodness as we feats!
